Scarlett Johansson has described her role in The Batman Part II as one of the most difficult of her career, saying it gave her "a lot of existential angst." In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, the actress said the part was "hard to crack," but she did not reveal which character she is playing.

What Johansson said about the role

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight while promoting her new film Paper Tiger, Johansson was asked which of her upcoming franchise roles had pushed her furthest outside her comfort zone. She named the Matt Reeves film, saying she was unsure why the role had been so hard to pin down. She said it could have been the part itself or where she was in her life.

Johansson also has an upcoming role in Mike Flanagan's Exorcist film, which is referred to in some reports as Exorcist: Martyrs. She has previously appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Jurassic World.

Speculation about her character

Her character has not been confirmed. Online speculation has centred on several possibilities, including Gilda Dent, the wife of Harvey Dent, who becomes Two-Face in DC Comics. Other fan guesses include Poison Ivy and Andrea Beaumont, also known as The Phantasm. Johansson has not confirmed any of these, and the studio has not released official details.

Production changes and cast

The film has faced production changes. Warner Bros and DC Studios said filming had been halted temporarily because director Matt Reeves was dealing with a personal matter. No details of that matter have been released. Steven Soderbergh is overseeing the final stages of shooting, and Reeves is expected to return to direct once the film reaches post-production.

Robert Pattinson, who stars as Bruce Wayne, has also spoken about the sequel. He has praised its take on Bruce Wayne's and Batman's psychology. The cast also includes Sebastian Stan, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis and Jeffrey Wright.

What we know so far

Johansson's character remains unconfirmed, and her comments are the first she has made publicly about the part. The film is currently scheduled to open in theatres on 18 February 2028, according to IGN. One report gave a release date of 28 February 2028, so the date should be checked against official studio announcements.
