First lady Melania Trump is attending LSU's football game against Alabama at Tiger Stadium in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Saturday, where she is set to announce scholarship funding for students who have been in foster care. The visit is tied to her "Fostering the Future" program, and LSU junior Wynter Allen is among the students who will be recognized alongside her.

A $5 million endowment for former foster youth

According to LSU Athletics, the first lady will announce an LSU Foundation donor's $5 million gift to establish a Fostering the Future endowed scholarship. WAFB reported that the endowment is intended for LSU students who have been through the foster care system, according to officials.

Fox News reported that the first lady announced scholarships in partnership with her Be Best and Fostering the Future initiatives at the university on Saturday. Fox News also reported her message to the students: "I believe in you."

Allen, who received a $10,000 scholarship through the program, said the funding will help with potential student debt. He plans to graduate with a degree in journalism.

A student's path through foster care

Allen was raised in California and entered foster care at age 16. In an interview on Friday, he described how quickly his life changed once he entered the system, with court dates, lawyers and time away from his family.

Allen said he chose not to let those experiences set his direction. "I didn't let anything that happened dictate my life," he said. He added that he applied for the scholarship after learning about it earlier this semester while attending LSU, and that the award email came within days.

Allen said he looks forward to meeting the first lady in person. "Just to be able to thank her and shake her hand, it's as simple as that for me," he said.

Security and game-day changes

Because of the high-profile guests and on-site operations with the U.S. Secret Service, LSU has issued game-day notices on security measures and navigation. Fans are being directed to check a campus map before arriving, and LSU said some campus closures could affect access to primary entry gates.

Fans with access problems on game day can text "LSU" plus their issue and location to 69050, the university said.

What we know so far

The first lady's visit is scheduled for Saturday at Tiger Stadium, when LSU hosts Alabama. Allen's recognition and the endowment announcement are part of the event. Further details on the timing of the presentations and the full list of scholarship recipients have not been released.
