One person is dead and three others have been shot following two separate shooting incidents on the campus of Winston-Salem State University in North Carolina on Saturday night, according to the Winston-Salem Police Department. The shootings occurred during the university's homecoming weekend. Police first received a call about a shooting around 9:45 p.m. on Saturday, November 7.

Police update and campus response

The Winston-Salem Police Department held a news conference at about 1:45 a.m. on Sunday to provide an update. Officials said they were thinking of the families, friends and anyone who witnessed the violence. Forsyth County Emergency Medical Services confirmed that three shooting victims were taken to a hospital.

The campus was placed on lockdown during the night. Police later lifted the lockdown and, as of 1:25 a.m. Sunday, allowed students to walk back to their dormitories. Law enforcement officials said extra officers would be deployed on and around campus in the coming days.

Homecoming weekend overshadowed

The violence came on one of the most significant weekends of the university calendar. Winston-Salem State hosted its annual homecoming celebration on Saturday, including a football game against Fayetteville State University at Bowman Gray Stadium. Homecoming typically draws thousands of alumni, students, families and supporters to the city.

Winston-Salem State, a public historically Black university founded in 1892, is part of the University of North Carolina System. The shootings have raised concerns about safety during large campus gatherings that draw visitors from outside the university community.

What is still unknown

Police have not released the identity of the person who died or the names of the three people who were shot. Their conditions have not been publicly disclosed, and it is not yet known whether any of the victims are students. Authorities have not said where on campus each shooting took place, what led to the violence, or whether the two incidents were connected.

Police have not said whether anyone has been arrested or taken into custody, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Winston-Salem Police Department is continuing its investigation. Updates are expected as more information becomes available.

What we know so far

As of early Sunday, the confirmed facts are limited: one person dead, three people shot and taken to hospital, a campus lockdown that has since been lifted, and a continuing police investigation. Chopal Unfiltered will update this story as officials release further details.
