The Milwaukee Brewers took a 3-0 lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the World Series with a 10-1 win in Game 3 on Monday night at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida. Eight runs in the fifth inning broke the game open, and Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday night. The Brewers are one win from their first championship in franchise history.

The Rays drew a rare Tropicana Field sellout for the first World Series game played there since Game 2 in 2008. Many of the home fans had left the stadium before the final out. No team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit to win the World Series.

A fifth inning that decided the game

The Brewers' damage came in the fifth, after a series of smart plays on the bases. Jackson Chourio, Christian Yelich and William Contreras all got key hits early, and Milwaukee used an aggressive approach to keep pressure on Rays pitching.

The turning point came when Yelich took an aggressive secondary lead on a Contreras ground ball to third base. Junior Caminero's throw to second arrived too late to force him. Yelich was initially called out, but the Brewers challenged the call and the ruling was overturned.

Brice Turang's hard-hit one-hopper up the middle got past shortstop Taylor Walls, and two runs scored. Garrett Mitchell drove in a run with a single to left, and Cooper Pratt hit a double that deflected off Caminero's glove to bring in two more. Sal Frelick added another run-scoring double to left field.

Pitching and defense held the Rays down

Brewers starter Robert Gasser threw six shutout innings and allowed one hit, which set up the bullpen for the coming games. Milwaukee relievers Aaron Ashby, DL Hall and Abner Uribe were given a second consecutive day off, and closer Trevor Megill got a third straight day off.

The Brewers finished with 16 hits, the most in a nine-inning World Series game since the Diamondbacks had 16 against the Rangers in Game 2 of 2023. Tampa Bay did not advance a runner beyond first base until the ninth inning. Antonio Senzatela retired all six batters he faced after replacing Gasser, and Frelick made a tumbling catch in right field in the eighth inning to rob Ben Williamson of a hit.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy praised his players' effort. "Whether it's one out, two outs, whatever it is, the guys play hard," Murphy said. "They don't give in. They make every pitch count, and that's what it takes to win."

Milwaukee's postseason run

According to The Boston Globe, the Brewers are 10-1 in the playoffs and have won eight straight games, a streak that the paper described as the first of its kind since the 2017 Nationals. Yelich's base running was singled out by teammates. Frelick said Yelich, a 14-season veteran, "cares about base running more than" anyone else on the team.

The Brewers' fans filled the area behind the third base dugout and cheered when the game ended. Murphy said the crowd showed how much the team has won over fans in Milwaukee and across Wisconsin.

What we know so far

Milwaukee leads the best-of-seven series 3-0 and will try to close it out in Game 4 on Tuesday night. Tampa Bay must win four straight games to take the title. The Rays were held to three hits and a walk in Game 3, and their next game will test whether they can change the momentum of the series.

Game 4 is scheduled for Tuesday, 29 October. Full broadcast and start-time details for the remaining games were not included in the reports reviewed for this story.
