Rashee Rice Files for Bankruptcy Amid Dallas Crash Settlement
Kansas City Chiefs receiver Rashee Rice has filed for bankruptcy in Texas, according to court documents, as a $1 million settlement tied to his 2024 Dallas crash remains largely unpaid.
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has filed for bankruptcy in Texas, according to court documents, while a $1 million civil settlement stemming from a 2024 crash in Dallas remains largely unpaid. Reports differ on the scale of his debts, with ESPN citing more than $3.45 million and WFAA describing the settlement as a key factor in the filing.
Settlement and garnished pay
An attorney for a plaintiff in the case, March Lenahan, told NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth that Rice's paychecks from the Chiefs were being garnished. Lenahan said the vast majority of what Rice owes has not been paid.
Lenahan's client, Kathryn Kuykendall, was seeking a $1 million settlement last year. He said she suffered multiple injuries when the Uber she was in was struck by Rice's rented Lamborghini. Prosecutors said the Lamborghini was traveling 119 mph moments before impact.
Kuykendall and Rice agreed to a $1 million civil settlement in April 2025. A judge also signed a judgment requiring Rice to pay Kuykendall the $1 million, plus interest and attorney fees.
Criminal case and NFL discipline
The crash occurred in March 2024 on Central Expressway in Dallas. Rice left the scene before police arrived, later surrendered to an arrest warrant and took responsibility for the collisions in a statement.
Rice pleaded guilty in July 2025 to two third-degree felony charges related to the collision. He was sentenced to 30 days in jail and five years of probation, and was required to pay the victims' medical expenses. He was released from Dallas County Jail in June, after a jail stint tied to a probation violation in which he tested positive for THC.
The NFL found that Rice violated its personal conduct policy, and he missed the first six games of the 2025 season. The league said he caused the crash while driving erratically.
Rice's status with the Chiefs
Rice, 26, is in the final year of his rookie contract. He helped the Chiefs win the Super Bowl in the 2023 season and has since missed time with a knee injury.
This season he has played in five of the Chiefs' seven games, missing two due to injury. He has 20 catches for 243 yards and two touchdowns. He also missed the start of mandatory minicamp while he was in jail.
What we know so far
The bankruptcy filing is confirmed by court documents, but the total amount of Rice's debts is reported differently by different outlets. The Chiefs are scheduled to play the New York Jets on Sunday at noon. Neither the Chiefs nor Rice's representatives have been quoted on the filing in the reports reviewed, and the next steps in the bankruptcy case have not been reported.
Rice remains on the Chiefs' roster as the team prepares for its next game.
