The Dallas Mavericks visit the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday in a nationally televised NBA game that pits two former No. 1 overall picks against each other. Tipoff is scheduled for 9:30 p.m. ET at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio. The mavericks vs spurs matchup is drawing attention as Cooper Flagg and Victor Wembanyama meet for the second time this season.

Form and early-season records

The Spurs enter the game at 5-2 and are riding a five-game winning streak after losing their first two games. San Antonio reached the NBA Finals last season, losing to the Knicks, and has since found wins despite still settling its rotations.

The Mavericks are 4-3 and went 26-56 last season. Dallas appears to be moving forward with a roster built around its young core. Max Christie is out with a hip injury, and Dallas has several other players listed out or questionable, including Santi Aldama (knee, questionable), Tarik Biberović (heel), Sergio de Larrea (knee) and Dereck Lively II (foot).

Flagg and Wembanyama lead the way

Flagg, who was named the 2026 NBA Rookie of the Year, is averaging 25.2 points, 6.5 assists and 5.7 rebounds in his second season, according to CBS Sports. Kyrie Irving, who has been sitting out occasionally while recovering from knee surgery, is averaging 21 points and five assists per game, according to Yahoo Sports' injury coverage.

Wembanyama, the NBA Rookie of the Year in 2024, is averaging 25.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and 4.0 blocks per game this season. Spurs forward Tobias Harris is out with a calf injury, and Jayden Quaintance is out with a knee issue.

Where the game could be decided

San Antonio's small lineups could test Dallas on the perimeter, but they also leave the Spurs without a traditional matchup for Flagg. Analysts have noted that Stephon Castle has the strength to bother bigger players, and Wembanyama could look to exploit Dallas's big men, Daniel Gafford and Morez Johnson Jr.

Transition play is another key factor. The Spurs lead the league in fastbreak points, while the Mavericks allow the fourth-fewest. In the first meeting, a 122-106 San Antonio win on October 24, the Spurs were criticised internally for lapses in transition defence, a problem they would need to avoid again.

Betting markets and what comes next

Prediction markets on Kalshi price San Antonio at about an 84% chance to win, with Dallas at 18 cents per share. A CBS Sports model gives Dallas a 33% chance in simulations. The combined total is priced near the 229.5-point line. These are market and model views, not outcomes.

Both Flagg and Wembanyama are expected to be available, according to the injury reports. The result will show whether Dallas can turn its early-season progress into a road-style test in San Antonio, and whether the Spurs can keep their winning streak going. The second of four regular-season meetings between the teams is set for Wednesday night.
